Family Day Celebrations and Why a Card is a Perfect Gift
Rock legend Rod Stewart is often quoted as saying: “You go through life wondering what it is all about but at the end of the day it’s all about family.”
For each and every one of us, the word family means different things. Showing mum or dad or even your sister or brother a little love is one way to show your appreciation. What you might not know is that there are set days for everyone in the family that allow you to make a fuss of them. Here are some of our favourites.
Mother’s Day
When is it?
In March
Why celebrate it?
When we think of family day celebrations apart from birthdays, the first one we tend to mention is Mother’s Day. After all the work that mums do for us kids, it’s only right they have their own, special day where they can put their feet up and relax for a bit.
Celebrated on different days depending on which country you live in, mother’s day became a prominent yearly event from the turn of the 20th century. It’s mainly for the kids to show their appreciation, giving cards and flowers as well as cooking the Sunday lunch or helping clear up for the day, but in most families dad often gets involved in organising the celebrations.

Father’s Day
When is it?
3rd Sunday in June
Why celebrate it?
It’s been around for about as long as mother’s day but sometimes doesn’t get the focus that it deserves.
The day usually involves giving dad a small gift or card to show you appreciate them. Father’s day wasn’t the immediate success that mother’s day was and it took several decades for it to become popular. Nowadays, it’s a central part of the family appreciation calendar but tends to be more important as we grow older.
Brother’s Day
When is it?
24th May
Why celebrate it?
You may be surprised to learn that there is a brother’s day but there is, although it’s more often celebrated in places like the USA and Canada.
Here in the UK, it’s becoming slightly more popular and is not just confined to biological brothers – if you have a close male friend who you consider to be a ‘brother’ you can celebrate their contribution to your life as well.

Sister’s Day
When is it?
First Sunday in August
Why celebrate it?
Like brother’s day, sister’s day can either be your closest sibling or someone you are friends with. It’s about commemorating the ‘sisterhood’ rather than a biological connection and is more widely celebrated in other countries, particularly America.
National Family Week
When is it?
End of May to the Beginning of June
Why Celebrate it?
National Family Week is a chance to take part in locally organised events that help us appreciate family life and its importance in modern society.
Unfortunately, families spend much less time together than they used just a few decades ago, whether that’s because of work challenges, having to do household chores or simply because the kids spend more time on their smartphones and laptops talking to their friends.
